Course Offerings - 6th Grade

Language Arts 6

     Language Arts 6 is based on the California Common Core State Standards.  This class covers reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary development, and speaking.  Through the use of various curriculum materials students study setting, plot, character development, theme, forms of fiction, poetry, biography and autobiography, expository critique, and literary criticism.  The program is enriched by novels that build upon this study and help develop a love of reading and literature.  For a complete listing of the Common Core State Standards, please visit the state website at www.cde.ca.gov/index.asp and click on "Common Core State Standards".  The class meets daily for 85 minutes.  

Math 6

     Math 6 is based on the California Common Core State Standards.  This class covers basic computation skills including arithmetic, decimals, fractions, geometry, and an introduction to Algebra concepts.  The typical math pathway for middle school students is Math 6, Math 7, and Math 8 with students taking Algebra in ninth grade.  For a complete listing of the Common Core State Standards, please visit the state website at www.cde.ca.gov/index.asp and click on "Common Core State Standards".

     Math 6 meets daily for 85 minutes.  Students are placed in one of two levels:  Core (grade level) or Strategic (grade level with additional support in basic math concepts).  Placement is based on teacher recommendations, prior grades, and district benchmark testing scores.

 

Social Studies 6

     Social Studies 6 meets every other day for 85 minutes.  It is a standards-based course that introduces students to ancient civilizations and geography.  Students explore the civilizations of Ancient Egypt, China, India, Israel, Greece, and Rome.  It is an exciting course of study with many opportunities for interdisciplinary projects combining history, writing, language arts, technology, and art.

 

Science 6

     Science 6 meets every other day for 85 minutes.  It is a standards-based course that introduces students to earth science.  Topics of study include:  the Earth's resources, the Earth's internal structure, reshaping the land, oceanography, weather, and climate.  Labs, activities, and projects supplement and reinforce the concepts presented.  Also included in the program is a unit on Health.  Health topics include substance abuse prevention, family life, self-esteem, protecting your health, and decision-making skills.

 

Physical Education (PE)

     Physical Education meets every other day for 85 minutes.  It is a standards-based, co-educational course offering a varitey of fitness, individual, and team activities.  A variety of sports are introduced including:  softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, tennis, football, and dance.  Fitness concepts and activities are a major component of the curriculum.  These include:  jogging, jump rope, strength training, cardiovascular fitness training (aerobics), and flexibility training.  New games and other sports are introduced each year.  The district utilizes the Fitnessgram Fitness Test to assess state fitness standards.  Students are required to dress out (PE shorts/sweat pants/skirts/sneakers).  Students do not take showers at the middle school level.

     Most sixth grade students will have one elective that meets every other day for 85 minutes.  (See "Electives" elsewhere under "Academics")
