Math 6

Basic computation skills are presented and reviewed: arithmetic, decimals, fractions, geometry, and an introduction to Algebra concepts. This course covers the California 6th grade math standards.  

Pre-Algebra

Pre-Algebra is a foundation for the Algebra 1 program. This course covers the 7th grade California math standards and is designed to prepare students for Algebra 1.  

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation/performance on district placement test

Math 7                                                      

This class is designed to broaden students’ experience in mathematics. All operations with rational numbers; use of hand-held calculator; statistical tools such as mean, median, mode, and range; measurement; 2 and 3 dimensional geometric figures; squares and square roots; use of percents; variables; linear and non-linear functions; and graphing functions. Emphasis will be on problem-solving, discussion, estimation, mental math, and real applications. This course covers the district 7th grade math standards.  

PRE-ALGEBRA

It is a foundation for the Algebra 1 program. This course covers the California 7th grade math standards and is designed to prepare students for Algebra 1.   

Prerequisite: 6th grade teacher recommendation/ performance on district placement test.

ALGEBRA 1                                                     

This course is equivalent to a one year enriched Algebra course.  It is a foundation for the study of higher mathematics.   

Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation/performance on district math placement test. Seventh grade students new to Westborough may take a placement test to qualify for Algebra 1.

MATH 8

This course deals with all operations with real numbers, more study of probability, solving equations algebraically and graphically, two- and three- dimensional geometry, exponents and scientific notation, use of scientific calculator. Emphasis will be on problem-solving, group work/discussion, estimation, mental math, and real applications. This course covers the district 8th grade math standards.  This class is designed to give students wide experience in mathematics and to prepare them for study of Algebra I.  

ALGEBRA I

This course is equivalent to a one year enriched Algebra course.  It is a foundation for the study of higher mathematics.   

Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation/ Performance on district placement test.  Eighth grade students new to Westborough may take a placement test to qualify for Algebra 1.  

GEOMETRY

This course is equivalent to a 1 year high school geometry course. It is designed for upper-level math students. Study of geometric figures and their properties.  Emphasis on deductive reasoning.  Apply algebraic methods to solution of geometric problems. This is an introduction to trigonometry and coordinate geometry.  

Prerequisite: B or better grade in Algebra I. Eighth graders new to Westborough may take a placement test to qualify for Geometry by showing that they have mastered content of Algebra I.
