English Language Development (ELD)

English Language Development (ELD) Program

The ELD program at Westborough provides a variety of strategies to enhance and accelerate the acquisition of the English language for non-native speakers.  For newcomers to the country with little or no English, students are sent to Alta Loma Middle School for a year or two to acquire the necessary English language skills (speaking, understanding, reading, and writing) to become successful in a mainstream program.  Students who have the  basic skills in English but require additional support with the language are placed in specialized ELD classes, for example, Read 180 (a program to enhance vocabulary development and improve reading levels), an ELD support class (in addition to their regular language arts class), or an ELD Language Arts class.  Additionally, an ELD Instructional Aide provides support for ELL students in language arts, math, science, and social studies classes.  Placements are based on the CELDT (California English Language Development Test), STAR CST LA scores, prior grades, English fluency, teacher recommendations, and district benchmark test scores.
