Course Offerings - 7th Grade

Language Arts 7

     Language Arts 7 is based on the California Common Core State Standards.  This class covers reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary development, speaking, and literataure.  Through the use of various curriculum materials students study setting, plot, character development, them, forms of fiction, poetry, biography and autobiography, expository critique, and literary criticism.  The program is enriched by novels that build upon this study and help develop a love of reading and literature.  For a complete listing of the Common Core State Standards, please visit the state website at www.cde.ca/gov/index/asp and click on "Common Core State Standards".  This class meets daily for 85 minutes.

 

Math 7

     Math 7 is based on the California Common Core State Standards.  This standards-based curriculum covers seventh grade math standards.  For a complete listing of the Common Core State Standards, please visit the state website at www.cde.ca/gov/index/asp and click on "Common Core State Standards".

     Math 7 meets daily for 85 minutes.  Students are placed in one of two levels:  Core (grade level) or Strategic (grade level with additional support in basic math skills).  Placement is based on prior grades, teacher recommendations, and district benchmark testing scores.

 

Advanced Math 7

     For students who are gifted in math or have a special aptitude for the subject, advanced math seventh graders are placed in Advanced Math 7.  This class covers all of Math 7 and half of Math 8.  It is based on the California Common Core State Standards.  Students who successfully complete this course will be placed in Advanced Math 8/Algebra the following year.

Advanced Math 7 meets daily for 85 minutes and the pace is intense.  Placement is based on prior grades, teacher recommendations, and district benchmark testing scores.

 

Social Studies 7

     Social Studies 7 meets every other day for 85 minutes.  It is a standards-based course that introduces students to world history from the fall of Rome to the Enlightenment.  Included in this interdisciplinary course of study are the cultures and people of Asia, Europe, South America, and Africa.  Areas of study include:  geography, economics, current events, political science, history, anthropology, sociology, and technology.

 

Science 7

     Science 7 meets every other day for 85 minutes.  It is a standards-based course that introduces students to life science and health.  Topics of study include:  cells, heredity, evolution and classification, plants, animals, ecology, and the human body and body systems.  Additional topics may include substance abuse prevention, family life, self-esteem, and good decision making skills.  Labs, activities, and projects, supplement and reinforce concepts presented in class.

 

Physical Education (PE)

     Physical Education meets every other day for 85 minutes.  It is a standards-based, co-educational course offering a variety of fitness, individual, and team activities.  A variety of sports are introduced including:  softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, tennis, football, and dance.  Fitness concepts and activities are a major component of the curriculum.  These include:  jogging, jump rope, strength training, cardiovascular fitness training (aerobics), and flexibility training.  New games and other sports activities are introduced each year.  The district utilizes the Fitnessgram Fitness Test to assess state fitness standards.  Students are required to dress out (PE shorts/sweat pants/shirt/sneakers).  Students do  not take showers at the middle school level.
