Course Offerings - 8th Grade

Language Arts 8

     Language Arts 8 is based on the California Common Core State Standards.  This class covers reading, writing, grammar, spelling, vocabulary development, speaking, and literature.  Through the use of various curriculum materias, students study setting, plot, character development, theme, forms of fiction, poetry, biography and autobiography, expository critique, and literary criticism.  The program is enriched by novels that build upon this study and help develop a love of reading and literature.  For a complete listing of the Common Core State Standards, please visit the state website at www.cde.ca.gov/index.asp and click on "Common Core State Standards".

     Language Arts 8 meets daily for 85 minutes.  Students are placed in one of two levels:  Core (grade level) or Intensive (Read 180 - a program designed to bring a student's reading level up to grade level).  Placement is based on prior grades, teacher recommendations, and district benchmark testing scores.

Math 8

      Math 8 is based on the California Common Core State Standards.  This class covers eighth grade math standards and is designed for grade level eighth graders to prepare them for taking Algebra in ninth grade.  For a complete listing of the Common Core State Standards, please visit the state website at www.cde.ca.gov/index.asp and click on "Common Core State Standards".

      Math 8 meets daily for 85 minutes.  Students are placed in one of two levels:  Core (grade level) or Strategic (grade level with additional time offered in basic math skills).  Placement is based on teacher recommendations, prior grades, and district benchmark testing scores. 

Advanced Math 8/Algebra

    Students on the advanced math track will take Advanced Math 8/Algebra.  This class will cover the second half of  Math 8 plus Algebra I (high school curriculum).  This class is based on the California Common Core State Standards.  The curriculum is designed to prepare students for Geometry in ninth grade.

      Advanced Math 8/Algebra will meet daily for 85 minutes.  Placement is based on prior grades, teacher recommendations, and district benchmark testing scores.

U.S. History

     Eighth grade social studies covers American history from the time of the American Revolution to World War I.  The class meets every other day for 85 minutes.  This standards-based course includes concepts and skills from geography, economics, political science, history, anthropology, sociology, and technology.  Units of study include the geography of the U.S., the creation of the U.S. government, the Westward Movement, the Civil War and Reconstruction, industrial growth of the U.S., and the development of the U.S. as a world power.  Students will take the second half of U.S. History in eleventh grade.

Science 8

     Science 8 meets every other day for 85 minutes.  This standards-based course introduces students to Physical Science and health.  Topics of study include:  matter, motion and forces, work, machine, energy, the atom, interactions of matter, and astronomy.  Additionally, health topics may include enhancing self-esteem, decision making, goal-setting, healthy values, one's developing sexuality, healthy relationships, nutrition, first aid, substance abuse, and handling feelings.  Labs, activities, and projects, supplement and reinforce concepts presented in class.

Physical Education (PE)

     Physical Education meets every other day for 85 minutes.  This standards-based, co-educational course offers a variety of fitness, individual, and team activities.  A variety of sports are introduced including:  softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, tennis, football, and dance.  Fitness concepts and activities are a major component of the curriculum.  These include:  jogging, jump rope, strength training, cardiovascular fitness training (aerobics), and flexibility training.  New games and other sports activities are introduced each year.  The district utilizes the Fitnessgram Fitness Test to assess state fitness standards.  Students are required to dress out (PE shorts/sweat pants/shirt/sneakers).  Students do not take showers at the middle school level.

Electives

     Most eighth graders will have one elective that meets every other day for 85 minutes.  (See "Electives" elsewhere under "Academics")
